The DRV8881 is a bipolar stepper or brushed-DC motor driver for industrial applications. The device output stage consists of two N-channel power MOSFET H-bridge drivers. The DRV8881 is capable of driving up to 2.5-A peak current or 1.4-Arms current per H-bridge (with proper PCB ground plane for thermal dissipation and at 24 V and TA = 25℃).
AutoTune™ automatically tunes motors for optimal current regulation performance and compensates for motor variation and aging effects. AutoTune is available on the DRV8881E. Additionally, slow, fast, and mixed decay modes are available.
The PH/EN (DRV8881E) or PWM (DRV8881P) pins provide a simple control interface. An internal sense amplifier allows for adjustable current control. A low-power sleep mode is provided for very-low quiescent current standby using a dedicated nSLEEP pin.
Internal protection functions are provided for undervoltage, charge pump faults, overcurrent, short-circuits, and overtemperature. Fault conditions are indicated by anFAULT pin.

DRV8881P Dual H-Bridge Stepper or Dual Brushed DC Motor Driver Evaluation Module
The DRV8881P customer EVM is a platform revolving around the DRV8881P, amedium-voltage, dual Hbridgedriver, and highly-configurable power stage. This device has been optimized to control one or twobrushed DC motors, or a stepper motor. The DRV8881P can also be configured to drive a single-brushedDC motor using both output stages in parallel mode to increase the drive current.
The EVM houses a MSP430 microcontroller and an USB interface chip. The USB chip allows for serialcommunications from a PC computer where a Microsoft® Windows® application is used to schedule serialcommands. These commands can be used to control each of the device’s signals, and drive the motor ormotors at the desired rate.
The microcontroller firmware outputs the control signals and PWM signals to move the motor. Thefirmware also monitors the nFAULT signal to alert the GUI that a FAULT has occurred.
This document details the operation of the EVM, as well as the hardware configurability of the evaluationmodule.
